Professor Stafford's plea for the development of visual communication as a viable means of intellectual discourse was met with a bit of a yawn, since designers generally see themselves as experts in visual argumentation, and so her rant against "entrenched ideas that pictures are incompatible with reflection" was in a way directed to the wrong audience.
 

Steven Heller: Design Literacy, reviewed by Max Bruinsma:

That conclusion might sound a somewhat optimistic to Steven Heller, who in his introduction to Design Literacy states that even designers "who claim visual literacy are often ignorant when it comes to understanding and appreciating objects that are imprinted with the language of their own practice."
